The ingredients for this dish are simple yet work together to create a luxurious taste that beautifully complements the richness of the pork.

🥃 Substitutions and Variations

  • Ham – we recommend a bone-in smoked ham. For a smaller ham, go with a boneless ham (about 5 to 7 lbs). For a holiday feast, we recommend investing in a higher-quality ham than you might find at your local supermarket. But, even if you do, this recipe and technique will deliver a delicious ham.
  • Bourbon – If you would rather not cook with alcohol, simply omit it. If you’re wondering what’s the best bourbon to make the glaze with, we recommend Knobb Creek, TX Whiskey, or Woodford Reserve. It imparts amazing flavor, so you don’t want to go with the cheap brands.
  • Flavor Enhancers – Make sure the maple syrup is 100% pure. Seek out a quality orange marmalade. And fresh lemon juice is always best. Coarse-grain mustard adds amazing depth of flavor.

How To Make Bourbon Orange Glazed Ham

  1. Step 1: In a bowl, mix together the glaze ingredients.

  1. Step 2: Brush the glaze all over the ham.

  1. Step 3: Loosely tent the ham with foil and bake for 90 minutes.

  1. Step 4: Remove the foil, add more glaze, and continue roasting the ham.

  1. Step 5: Remove the ham from the oven and let it rest for 20 minutes.

  1. Step 6: Slice the ham, place on a platter, and serve. 

Expert Tip

As you are applying the first round of glaze to the ham, you’ll want to use about ½ cup. Be sure to save enough glaze to brush ample more on a couple more times at the end of the roasting process.

🍽️ How To Serve

  • This ham is delicious served warm or at room temperature. To reheat, cover the sliced ham tightly with foil and heat in a low-temperature oven (325°F) until the slices are warm (usually about 30 minutes, depending on how thick the slices are).
  • We like to save some of the bourbon orange glaze to pass at the table. However, remember that most of the alcohol will cook out during the cooking process. The glaze passed tableside will still have alcohol from the bourbon.
  • Apply the glaze before roasting (with foil tent) and then again during the last 15 to 20 minutes of cooking to prevent burning. Baste the ham at least twice for a beautiful, sticky coating that caramelizes perfectly while keeping the meat moist. Keep an eye on it, don’t let it burn!

Can a Smoked Ham Be Heated in a Slow-cooker?

For this recipe, you’ll get the best results in your oven. However, for smaller, boneless hams, you may want to consider our Slow-Cooker Spiral Ham.

How far in advance do I need to order my Mangalitsa ham?

Give yourself a couple of weeks, just to be certain. The ham comes pristinely packaged and will keep in the fridge for over a week, or can be frozen for up to several months. Remember to use the discount code LOON15 to receive a 15% discount when ordering!

Ingredients

  • ⅔ cup orange marmalade
  • ¼ cup Bourbon or dark rum
  • 3 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoon coarse-ground mustard or Dijon
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon Kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper ground
  • 1 7 to 9 lb half ham bone-in, smoked

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 325°F.
  • In a medium bowl, mix the marmalade, Bourbon, maple syrup, mustard, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
    ⅔ cup orange marmalade, ¼ cup Bourbon, 3 tablespoon pure maple syrup, 3 tablespoon coarse-ground mustard, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, ½ teaspoon Kosher salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Brush the ham all over with about ½ cup of the glaze. Place the ham in the roasting pan (or on a rimmed baking sheet) and loosely cover the ham with foil. Place the pan on a grate in the lower third of your oven for 90 minutes.

  • Remove the ham from the oven and increase the temperature to 425°F. Gently peel the foil away from the roast. Meanwhile, brush on another ½ cup of the glaze over the ham. Return the ham to the oven for about 5 to 8 minutes. Remove the ham again, apply one more liberal layer of the glaze, and roast for another 5 minutes. Keep an eye on the roast, don't let the glaze burn!
  • Remove the ham and let rest for 15 to 20 minutes. Place on a platter (or cutting board), slice, and serve at once.

Though this ham is delicious when served at room temperature, it’s amazing when served warm. The marbling becomes melt-in-your-mouth delicious. 
Leftovers will keep (covered) in the fridge for up to a week. Sliced ham can be frozen for up to several months.

    If you have never tried a Mangalitsa Ham, you are missing out. The flavor is enhanced by the marbling which is signature for mangalitsa pork. Amazing!
